FEEDBACK ON MIX / PERFORMANCE ETC. APPRECIATED

A cover of my friend Tom's song, who goes by TK66.

Tom and myself shared some of our first psychedelic trips and experimentation together, around 2011. Big and formative experiences.

Not long after Tom wrote this track. In 2013 we lived together for about 6 months in Zaragoza, Spain and jammed a lot of his songs. This was one, really enjoyed playing it back then, and still do today. At the time I had written a lead part using octave chords for the chorus (forgotten, now). We practiced it to go play at open mic but don't think we ended up doing it for whatever reason. He recorded a full band version of this song for his debut album, which is still to see the light of day. So this feels cheeky to get the first release of this song, but when I asked him about me covering it, he said he'd be honoured.

Today for weekly beats I just wanted to jam something basic on the acoustic and sing, and then I thought to do this cover, as I played this tune a few times earlier this week.

Influences wise, in retrospect after recording it, I feel I got into Kurt Vile territory (I've listened to him a tonne). I think vocals and feel also maybe somewhat derived from some of the acoustic stuff by Brand New (acoustic guitar also reminds me of Luca).

Really had a lot of fun working on this one today. In the end got totally sucked in and spending probably a good 5 hours on it.

Overall the recording was sloppy. I was pretty tired today so recorded something lazy style. I didn't have a higher gear. Came across and most parts would ideally have a retake or tidy up.
But whatever, feel great about the session.

This is great. Performance and feel absolutely serves the song. Doubling of the vocals was really effective, and the trashy solo in the middle was great. I’d like maybe a bit more brightness on the acoustic guitar - it’s really a great part, I’d love to hear a bit more texture in it.  Tell Tom to release his album, it’s a good song! Great work.

Thanks for the feedback, great to get some ideas for mixing, I may well try to look at how I can get a brother guitar. I will pass on the comment to Tom!
Thanks for listening!

Don’t know if you need another guitar, I thought it sounded good! Perhaps a diffferent microphone. Was that your laptop mic?

Sorry, that was meant to say 'brighter guitar'. No, it was recorded through my Rode NT1, if a little hastily set up and probs not the best positioning and noise isolation, was my first time recording acoustic guitar in a looong time. Happy to hear any tips or suggestions you might have smile

super into this. almost hits a "Sad Early Ween" vibe, which is an arrow straight to my heart.

just a couple quick notes (only because you asked!) about the recording:

1.) the performance is great imo. i think the laid back take serves the song in this context, and i don't think i would enjoy it as much if it was all shiny and perfect. melody/ vibe/ and emotion > everything else. and that all came through for me.

2.) was the acoustic recorded live at the same time as the vocal, or is it on a separate track? if separate, these are a couple things that i would maybe try just to give it a little bit of it's own space and clear a little room for the vocal:
>pan the acoustic a little bit to the left (like, 5 to 15%). sometimes that little bit of panning can open things up, and since your vocal double is panned right i would take the acoustic just a little to the left. i would maybe pan it to what feels like too wide, and then bring it back towards the center while you listen until it feels like it snaps into place.

>i would maybe carve out some of the low mids on the acoustic (i'm guessing around 300k). you could probably boost the highs a little bit on the acoustic to give it a little more sparkle. i'd just be mindful that you aren't stepping on the vocal cuz you have some sweet hights coming through on the vocal.

just a couple thoughts. all of this is subjective though, so take it with a grain of psychedelic salt.   big_smile

please tell Tom i think he wrote a great song and please tell you i think you made a great recording of that great song

Wow, this thoughtful and kind comment is really appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me notes on the performance and recording and mix. I did ask and I'm really grateful you gave them!

It's great to hear about the performance as I second guess myself and lack confidence as a singer, but this did feel good, so maybe I should trust that more. For mixing notes, really helpful, I've already been playing around with the mix to incorporate them. The panning of guitar to the left to balance with the vocals was a great note!

Many thanks and I will pass on your notes to Tom and myself smile heart
